What a companion can actually do besides talk — and how each thing it did is shown to you.
A companion can do things, not only say them. It can search the web and read a page, work with files in folders you have given it, write to another companion or call one, and search your past conversations.
Everything it does is shown to you as it happens. There is no hidden work.
Reading a pill#
Each thing a companion does becomes one small pill in the conversation, carrying four things:
A verb, which changes tense. While it runs, searching. Once it lands, searched. So a glance tells you whether the turn is still in motion.
What it acted on — the search text, a shortened web address, a file path, the name of the companion it wrote to.
How long it took, once done. Tenths of a second under ten seconds, whole seconds up to a minute, then minutes and seconds.
A state orb at the end: running, done, or failed. A failure shows its reason on the pill rather than hiding it.
Pills sit above the reply when the work came first, and below it when the companion did something after speaking. They do not open — hovering one shows the exact arguments it was called with.
What it can do#
The web. Search it, and read a specific page.
Files — only inside the folders you have named for that companion. Five things: list a directory, read a file, write one, edit one, delete one.
Important
Within a folder you have granted, a companion does not ask before each write. The folder boundary is the permission — you decide once, when you add it, and everything inside is then fair game. Nothing outside is reachable: paths that try to climb out of the folder are refused, and so are symlinks that point beyond it.
If that is more than you want, give the companion no folders at all. Then it has no file tools — not disabled ones, none.
Other companions. Look up who else exists, write to one, read its own inbox, or open a live call.
Your past conversations. A companion can search the conversations it has had with you word-for-word, including any history you imported into it. This is the literal transcript, and it is a different thing from memory — memory is the notes, this is the recording.

The tools you never see#
Memory is the exception to "everything is shown". When a companion recalls something or writes a memory down, no pill appears. The only sign is the presence line reading remembering.
That is a deliberate choice rather than an oversight: remembering is meant to feel like remembering. What was recalled is not hidden from you, though — it is on the 🧠 badge under your own message, in full.
